Hello dear reader,
I hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving holiday! During the week of Thanksgiving, I had an opportunity to take some time off from work and spend more time with my wife and children, for which I am incredibly thankful. We gathered with family, had some adventures together, and started putting up Christmas decorations.
We always start decorating for the Christmas season during the Thanksgiving break. Most years this includes putting up the Christmas tree, our stockings, and a miscellany of decorations throughout the house. This year, for the first time, we hung up Christmas lights on our home’s exterior. This was only possible because of the kindness of our wonderful godparents who gave us some of their lights. I am grateful for their generosity and giving spirits!
As I was putting up the lights, I was inspired to write today’s poem. May the light of Christmas shine within each of our hearts and fill us with kindness and generosity!
Christmas Lights
Driving through the neighborhood in our van Past houses adorned with celestial bands Brilliant strands of colored bulbs and lights Tiny capsules of hope in the winter's night More than simply our neighbors' festive decor Purchased online or grabbed from the store Beacons as precious as gifts of glistening gold Offerings of beauty against the bitter cold Amidst the gleeful shouts of our little ones The shimmer of wonder and hope has begun To take root and grow into a marvelous joy The same I treasured and blessed as a boy So I'll ascend my ladder with flames in hand To place these candles within their stands I'll shake and sway in the gusts of winds Fighting against the divided Scrooge within With hope the unknown passers-by may find Merriment and cheer in a simple mercy kind Like wine to gladden the hearts of men Sparking the hope and wonder within
Lastly, I wanted to share a poem titled “Let There Be More” by
published this week in thenewsletter. The rhyming verse of this poem has a song-like quality and the common refrains such as “more” and “let there be” create a familiarity that is then paired with the unexpected. I really enjoyed the poem and thought you might as well.Thank you for reading!
With gratitude,
Drew Chancey
p.s. If you have purchased a copy of Goodnight, Child of God, would you please leave a review on Amazon and the Ancient Faith Store?1 Thank you for helping share the book in this way!
“There is No Rose” is one of my favorite Christmas carols. This version was recorded by the St. Patrick Orthodox Church Choir.
Do you have a favorite carol? I’d love to hear what you enjoy listening to as we draw near to Christmas during this Nativity season.
No purchase necessary. My understanding is you can leave a review on either of these stores regardless of where you purchased the book. Thank you for your support!
