Created in the Image of God
Some of the most vivid moments of wonder in my life have occurred during the times leading up to the births of my children. Often these seasons have been busy getting ready for the new addition to the family to arrive but, on occasion, I’ve had the opportunity to slow down and marvel at the miracle of life being carried and nurtured by my wife.
In today’s poem, Genesis, I reflect on these experiences and, drawing on the imagery of the account of creation in the book of Genesis, explore the beauty of the human person as the pinnacle of God’s creation.
As glorious as the natural world and expanse of the universe are, they do not compare to the beauty and worth of every human person - including you and me - who are made in the image of God. At the creation of the universe, God, in perfect love as Trinity, sovereignly speaks life and the whole cosmos into being. This same God knits us together with, knows us and call us His children, dearly beloved and of infinite worth.
“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”
Genesis 1:31
Genesis
Out of chaos the Artificer begins Molding one from the love of two Planted in fertile ground of womb A small cosmos in darkness suspends Light ignites within a single beat Expanding out into infinite space Which outward glows on mother's face Icon of tenderness and love replete A primordial world forms inside Divided waters above and below Protective walls as firmament bestow An earthly home for flesh and sky Dust gathers as life deepens roots Each feature now a scape of land Mountaintops resting on tiny hands Readying to bring forth fruit In season will an inheritance assume A Light greater than sun near or far Heir to promise of Abraham's stars Now curled inside like crescent moon Child of God in image and likeness Beloved endowed with infinite worth Known though hidden awaiting birth Created for paradisiacal brightness
